Our Footprints
Buren-Douglass Neighborhood Center focused on a need for community impact in 2021. Coordinating a partnership with Buren Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Herculaneum, MO, provided the use of their campus area for our wellbeing gardening, workshops, and classrooms.
Buren Chapel A.M. E. Church has been a part of the Herculaneum, Missouri community since 1908. Their campus accessibility includes the last black one-room schoolhouse in Jefferson County. Herculaneum public school system provided the building and schooling for black children established 1927 with the original building replaced with the present one built in 1951.
Renovations to the schoolhouse this summer are allowing more onsite classroom teaching space. Buren-Douglass Neighborhood Center will continue the legacy of education in the Herculaneum and Jefferson County areas on this site.
